OSPAR EUTROPHICATION STRATEGY

The Eutrophication Strategy is focused on combating eutrophication in order to achieve and maintain a healthy marine environment where eutrophication does not occur. (“Eutrophication” means the enrichment of water by nutrients causing an accelerated growth of algae and higher forms of plant life to produce an undesirable disturbance to the balance of organisms present in the water and to the quality of the water concerned, and therefore refers to the undesirable effects resulting from anthropogenic enrichment by nutrients as described in the OSPAR Common Procedure).

To implement this Strategy, the OSPAR Commission has adopted:

x Decisions, recommendations and other agreements
x OSPAR Integrated Report 2003 on the Eutrophication Status of the OSPAR Maritime Area
x Implementation Reports and Implementation Reporting Formats
x Reports and other publications on eutrophication
x Eutrophication Committee Work Programme

Recent work by the OSPAR Commission on eutrophication is described in this extract from the Annual Report of the OSPAR Commission 2006/2007.
