Friday Ocean Findings Issue 65: The Vigo Declaration
Dear friends and colleagues across the OSPAR community,

It is an honour to begin my 2nd tenure as Executive Secretary at such a transformative moment for OSPAR. The recent adoption of the Vigo Declaration represents a bold recommitment to our shared vision: a clean, healthy and biologically diverse North-East Atlantic Ocean, which is productive, used sustainably and resilient to climate change and ocean acidification.

As I take up this role, I do so inspired by the clear direction set by the Declaration. We have committed not only to protecting marine biodiversity, but also to:
  • Restoring degraded benthic habitats
  • Reducing impacts from underwater noise
  • Banning harmful discharges from ship exhaust systems in coastal waters
  • Eliminating marine litter and supporting a global treaty to end plastic pollution
  • Enhancing protection of Marine Protected Areas beyond national jurisdiction through collaborative international management
  • Expanding OSPAR’s maritime area in Macaronesia, and strengthening cooperation with global partners
  • And reaffirming our determination to address climate change, ocean acidification through ambitious, science-based action.

The Declaration reminds us that collaboration—across sectors, borders, and generations—is the key to our continued success. I look forward to working with all of you as we bring these commitments to life and build an ocean future we can be proud of.
