| | OSPAR is proud to announce the publication of the OSPAR Science Agenda (OSA). The OSA brings together key knowledge gaps that, if addressed, will support OSPAR’s work to assess and protect the marine environment and deliver the OSPAR North-East Atlantic Environment Strategy (NEAES). Furthermore, for OSPAR Contracting Parties that are also EU Member States, OSPAR’s assessments provide an important evidence base for national marine strategies under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).
The OSA highlights a wide range of priority knowledge gaps across the North-East Atlantic—from biodiversity, food webs and marine species to pollution, climate change, and human pressures—helping to guide research that supports marine environmental assessment and policy. The ambition is to help address these knowledge gaps which were identified in OSPAR’s Quality Status Report 2023 and where OSPAR is seeking engagement and support from the wider scientific and policy community.
The OSA is a living document. It will be updated regularly to reflect new developments, emerging priorities, and progress in addressing existing knowledge gaps.
By setting out these priority areas, the OSA provides a valuable foundation for collaboration. It will help guide OSPAR’s engagement in external research and policy initiatives and support the delivery of OSPAR’s objectives, including through the OSPAR Project Mechanism.
We invite researchers, policy experts, and organisations working in marine science and governance to explore and share the OSA, and to consider how their work can contribute to addressing these priorities.
