Executive Secretary Darius Campbell is in Istanbul at the global meeting of Secretariats of the Regional Seas Conventions (RSCs) from all over the world. Together they will be developing plans to support Contracting Parties in their achievement of the new United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals.

The OSPAR Convention is visiting the International Maritime Organization this week for the meeting of Contracting Parties to the London Convention and its Protocol.

OSPAR's Network of Marine Protected Areas
Since 2005, all 12 Contracting Parties (CPs) bordering the North-East Atlantic have nominated sites to the OSPAR Network of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) both in their national waters as well as collectively in areas beyond national jurisdiction. By the end of 2015, the network comprises 423 MPAs with a total surface area of 789,125 km2 or 5.8 % of the OSPAR Maritime Area.

This week sees the meetings of two of OSPAR's Intersessional Correspondence Groups (ICG). The ICG on Coordination of Biodiversity Assessment and Monitoring (ICG-COBAM) is meeting in Trondheim whilst Ghent is the venue for the ICG on Trend Assessment of Annual Data on Dumping of Waste and Other Matter at Sea (ICG-Trend).
