Arctic Outcome Working Group meeting in Greenland

11 October 2024

OSPAR's Arctic Outcomes Working Group (AOWG) met on 30 September and 1 October 2024 in Nuuk, Greenland. The meeting was convened by Sara Viljanen (Finland) and Oliver Ó Cadhla (Ireland).

Established by the OSPAR Commission in 2022, this group contributes to the delivery of the OSPAR Commission’s 2022-2025 Arctic Outcomes Roadmap, which sets out the steps considered necessary to support the OSPAR Commission’s commitment to protect the Arctic marine environment in the OSPAR Maritime Area.

At this meeting, the AOWG continued its discussions on the development of key actions to deliver OSPAR’s commitment. Representatives from the Saami Council and the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) joined the meeting on 1 October 2024 to discuss engagement of Indigenous Peoples Organisations in OSPAR’s work. The working group also considered ways to further strengthen collaboration and cooperation with other organisations, such as the Arctic Council and its Working Groups and the International Maritime Organisation.

The next meeting of the AOWG will take place in early 2025 where the work resulting from this meeting will be further discussed and continued.
