Convention for Biological Diversity Special Virtual Session

21 September 2020

The Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) held a special virtual session from 15-18 September 2020 due to the delay of the SBSTTA 23 due to COVID-19. No decisions or Recommendations would be taken at the meeting, but the sessions allowed to continue momentum in developing the CBD post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

The 5th Global Biodiversity Report was launched at a virtual session to allow states to use the information in preparation for the CBD COP 15. This important milestone report provides information about the measures needed to support biodiversity globally. The report concluded that none of the Aichi targets have been met in full, which was seen as a disappointment and that parties have not taken all actions needed to stop the loss of biodiversity. However, it has been found that where policy decisions and actions have been taken this has had a positive impact on biodiversity. The progress made on Aichi target 11 was highlighted as important by several parties, however it was noted that further efforts are needed to ensure marine protected areas are well managed so that they can deliver effective protection.

Progress is being made in CBD in developing the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. The special online session discussed the latest development of the draft framework. Many supportive interventions on the continued work were presented. Input to the process is foreseen from the UN in the form of a report from the UN Environment Management Group with a view to identify proposals on how the UN system can support Contracting Parties in develop and implement the post-2020 GBF.
