Meeting of the Working Group on Inputs to the Marine Environment (INPUT)
Portugal hosted OSPAR’s experts in riverine & atmospheric inputs at the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera in Lisbon. Situated on the bank of the River Tagus looking out to the Atlantic Ocean, this was a strong visual reminder of the importance of the experts’ work.
The delegates worked hard to carry out a thorough review of progress in delivering the input-relevant objectives of the eutrophication and hazardous substances thematic strategies of OSPAR’s North-East Atlantic Environment Strategy 2010-2020. The review helped inform the experts to formulate new objectives for OSPAR’s Strategy 2020-2030.
As usual, the meeting discussed data deliver and assessment for both the annual Comprehensive Atmospheric Monitoring Programme report and the Riverine Inputs and Discharges reports, ready for publication. These two programmes provide the data that will underpin the INPUT indicator assessments for OSPAR’s Quality Status Report (QSR) 2023. So INPUT experts took time to explore ways of improving the data coverage and analysis methodologies to plan for the best possible indicator assessments for the QSR.
INPUT’s excellent Chair, Lars Sonesten (Sweden), was re-elected for the next two-year period. This means the work of this expert group will be skilfully guided through the transition to the new OSPAR Strategy and in its preparations for the QSR 2023.
