Marine Protected Areas meeting 2019

15 October 2019

The Chair of ICG-MPA, prof. doc Henning von Nordheim (Germany), informed OSPAR that after 20 years of chairing the group he would now be passing on this interesting challenge to a new chair as he was about to enjoy retirement. The contributions by Henning to the great progress in OSPAR on establishing a network of Marine Protected Areas was acknowledged and much appreciated during the meeting. Since the programme to establish the network had begun, the meeting now noted that over 500 MPAs were included in the network. This includes seven MPAs designated collectively by OSPAR in the area beyond national jurisdiction.

The meeting further developed the nomination proforma of a new proposal to designate an MPA to protect seabirds in the ABNJ area.
