SUT/MASTS Workshop on Salvage, Decommissioning & Wreck Removal

12 October 2020

The eighth Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) and Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS) Salvage, Decommissioning and Wreck Removal Workshop was held on 8-9 October 2020. This annual event is open to international expertise from industry, science and government and aims to understand the ecosystem impact of anthropogenic activity particularly in the Arctic and Greater North Sea OSPAR maritime areas. The 2020 edition addressed global sustainability challenges, with consistent decision making the thread throughout. The sessions covered climate changes impact on decommissioning and wreck removal; decommissioning and wreck removal impact on climate change; consistent decision making and ecosystem impact of explosives.

The OSPAR Secretariat introduced the OSPAR Commission, its scope of work including the main objectives, the guiding principles, the way it is organised and a view of the strategy. The OSPAR measures to prevent and eliminate pollution from offshore sources were presented with a focus on the disposal of disused offshore installations.
