Action 54: Good cleaning practices and technologies
Action Title: Establish an exchange platform on experiences on good cleaning practices in beaches, riverbanks, pelagic and surface sea areas, ports and inland waterways. Develop best practice on environmental friendly technologies and methods for cleaning.
Lead Party(ies): ICG-ML with assistance from the Netherlands, Germany, Seas at Risk and KIMO International
The Netherlands for the beaches and riverbanks
What is the issue?
Since the start of the RAP ML, there is an evolving body of experience around how best to remove marine litter in a way that does not have unintended negative impacts on the environment. Experience depends across locations and type of environment. This action aimed to start gathering any examples of good practice to share with the wider community.
What has OSPAR Done?
Several products of the Interreg Clean Atlantic project have contributed to this action, focusing on the Atlantic regions of OSPAR, including best practice for coastal cleaning, based on experience in France and approaches for the removal of ALDFG in Madeira. These products along with information within the Clean Atlantic Knowledge platform all contribute to a strengthened knowledge base.
Final outputs and published reports
No dedicated work undertaken for this action to date, however there are links with the work being completed under the interreg funded CleanAtlantic project for which OSPAR is on the Advisory Board.
The CleanAtlantic project kicked off in 2017 and will run until 2021.
